Call of Duty is a franchise of first-person shooter video games released by Activision. It focused first on games set in World War II, starting in 2003. Amid the Cold War, futuristic worlds, and outer space, the series has seen games set over time. First, the games were created by Infinity Ward, then by Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games as well.
Other developers have produced several spin-offs and handheld games. On November 13, 2020, the most recent title, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was published.
Release of Call Of Duty
A new year means, as always, a new Call of Duty game. The upcoming release of Call of Duty 2021 is as mysterious as it is exciting. We are sure to get Warzone updates for another year combined with the franchise’s brand new (or returning) setting. Traditionally, Call of Duty comes out in November. In October, however, Modern Warfare and Black Ops 4 were both announced. Ideally, as we saw in the releases of COD WW2 and Infinite Warfare, Call of Duty targets the first Friday of every November. The tradition of Friday began with Black Ops 3, where previous games were published on the first Tuesday of November.
How was the response?
With the free-to-play Call of Duty: Warzone brought lots of new players and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War brought back the ever-popular zombie mode. As a result, the Call of Duty series has been wildly successful in the last year or so. Activision has shown that the merger of the two is determined to keep Warzone in the Call of Duty universe as a constant when threading in fresh standalone.
How would the title be named?
During their investor call on February 4, Activision officially announced that there is a new Call of Duty game coming this year. It was also shared that the 2021 title will run parallel to Warzone. On the first Friday of November, we should expect COD 2021 to be published again. On the second Friday of November, Black Ops Cold War was released, which may very well be due to the lower than usual development time Treyarch had for the game.
What about the development?
Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Treyarch are the current primary development studios for Call of Duty. Such studios typically operate on 3-year development cycles. However, for their most recent scheduled 2020 release, Sledgehammer Games did not have the lead slot, which became Treyarch’s Black Ops Cold War instead.
Because of this, we can assume that the lead for the 2021 Call of Duty title will be Sledgehammer Games. A Tweet Sledgehammer posted for 2021 in the new year is endorsed, stating, “Power off. Power On.” It stated that 2021 is their game release year; it’s a cryptic tweet, perhaps.
